Affordable Surfers Paradise on Venice Beach: Hotel Erwin
It’s no secret that the beaches in the Los Angeles area are amongst some of the best beaches in the U.S. From Malibu to Manhattan Beach, the entire coastline is alluring.
However, the beachfront hotel prices are not.
Luckily Hotel Erwin, a Joie de Vivre hotel, is here to save the day… And your wallet!
Surfers unite for an affordable hotel steps away from gnarly waves, fabulous shopping and a rooftop bar.
Full disclosure, I’m actually not a surfer at all, but who doesn’t love rooftop bars and shopping. Am I right, ladies?
I arrived at night and was greeted by neon lights and graffiti-inspired artwork in the driveway.
The lobby is small but inviting with leather cushions backed by surfboards. Surf videos are projected onto the white surfboards and play on repeat throughout the night.
The rooms are spacious but nothing extraordinary. They’re comfortable, and the pop of color makes them particularly fun.
But the charm of Hotel Erwin lies in the tiny details.
For instance, their green leopard printed robes really tap into that funky and adventurous Venice Beach culture.
The diverse murals are permanently apart of every guest room, and were done by Taos, New Mexico native, Larry Bell.
Also in every guest room, free for use, are the always gentle and wonderfully smelling LATHER products.
But the uber unique, and oddly charming, details of Hotel Erwin are actually hidden at first glance.
Forget the typical hotel packages like “Girls Weekend Getaway” or “Romantic Weekend for Two,” Hotel Erwin knows how to cater to their crowd with the“Ink & Stay” package for those of us who love getting tatted up.
The rate includes accommodations, a $100 tattoo voucher from The Black Rose Tattoo in Venice Beach, Lubriderm lotion, an ice-pack, and of course tequila to celebrate… or numb the pain.
I’d love to see an equally unique package for surfers, given that surfboards welcome guests inside, and the beach is at your fingertips.
Regardless, cocktails at the High Rooftop Lounge should accompany any hotel package.
I think we can all agree a city can never have enough rooftop bars. That is, Certainly not ones that have stellar 360-degree views of Los Angeles, and its pristine beaches.
Lastly, the ocean-facing penthouse, Red Bull Dogtown Suite, is perfect for hosting a gathering post-surfing. The room can fit up to 35 people comfortably, and boasts a private balcony with views of the waves and a DJ booth.
Expressive. Adventurous. Diverse. Fun. Rebellious. Hotel Erwin’s slogan portraits every little detail accurately, the only thing I think I would add is Affordable.
Abbot Kinney Blvd, home to the delicious restaurants Gjelina and Tasting Kitchen, is only a ten minute walk away.
